For most visitors the first glimpse of Aigues Mortes will be a view of the Constance Tower. Built shortly after the town was founded by Louis IX in 1241, Constance Tower was originally the town's sole defence. So great was the tower's weight that it was founded on a platform of oak pillars, driven through the marshy soil.
