Founded in 657AD by the Anglo-Saxon King of Northumbria, Whitby Abbey was initially known as Streoneshalh, meaning Fort Bay or Tower Bay, after a supposed Roman settlement that previously existed on the site. The monastery was eventually destroyed by Henry VIII in 1540.
